Happy Birthday Saint Nicolas!

Starting December, Saint Nicolas arrives to Holland on his boat from spain. He brings mandarins, ginger cookies and a bag full of presents. Children place their shoe by the chimney with some carrots, sugar and water for the Saint's horse and they sing some songs in front of the window. Saint Nicolas rides his white horse over the rooftops with his helpers dressed in bright colors who go down the chimneys and leave small presents in their shoes. On the 5th of Dec it is the Saint's birthday and he brings around a big sack of presents.

When you grow up and stop believing, you celebrate it in a different way. You draw a name out of a hat and for that person you make a poem and artwork and buy a present. This is what me and my family did this afternoon, see pictures below.
